What is Ayurveda?
AYURVEDA is comprised of two words. Ayur means Life. Veda means Knowledge.
Thus, Ayurveda provides guidelines on how to live a healthy, balanced life and how to heal ourselves holistically and naturally. It is a traditional, holistic system of health science from India, which has been practiced for over 5,000 years. Ayurveda seeks to restore the natural balance and state of health to mind, body & soul through the use of herbs, diet, colors, aromas, lifestyle changes, yoga, and meditation along with other five sense therapies. You are unique, and Ayurveda takes an individual approach to enlivening the intelligence inherent in every cell of your body. The timeless principles of Ayurveda can help you to live a healthier life, in tune with yourself and Nature. Ayurveda has been found to significantly improve several chronic health conditions and counteract the effects of stress and aging.
Health is the balanced and dynamic integration between our environment, body, mind, and spirit. Ayurveda describes three energies which govern our inner and outer environments as: movement, transformation, and structure. These energies are referred to as Doshas; there are 3 of them: Vata (Wind), Pitta (Fire), and Kapha (Earth). Your essential nature is called your constitution or prakruti, and is an individual blend of the three energies. Your unique balance of these three energies was determined at the moment of conception and is your ideal state of balance. It determines what is in harmony with your nature and what will cause you to become out of balance, sick, and diseased. Knowledge of your constitution is essential to developing optimal health. Your constitution determines how you react to various foods, colors, aromas, and general life habits. Your imbalance is called your vikruti, and it indicates which energies or doshas need balancing thru the different therapies. Ayurveda provides guidelines to re-establish our balance and move towards our essential constitution.
Ayurveda is considered the healing side of Yoga. Likewise, Yoga is the spiritual side of Ayurveda. Both Ayurveda and Yoga do more than address disease, they help people stay vital and realize their full human potential. Prana, the vital life force in all living beings, is a component of both yoga and Ayurveda. Prana weaves together these two sister sciences. Together, they encompass a complete approach to the well being of the body, the mind, and the spirit

The Goals of Ayurveda
The goals of Ayurveda are:
To keep the body in a state of health and free from disease
To show one how to use health as a basis for their true purpose in Life.
When we live our lives in such a way that we choose things that support
our true purpose in Life, we are on the path of enlightenment.

The Guiding Principles of Ayurveda
The guiding principles of Ayurveda are:
Take time each day to quiet your mind (meditate).
Eat a colorful, flavorful diet.
Engage in daily exercise that enhances flexibility, strength, and cardiovascular fitness.
Sleep soundly at night.
Eliminate what is not serving you.
Cultivate loving, nurturing relationships.
Perform work that awakens your passion.

The Five Elements of Ayurveda
Ayurveda is based upon the five elements of nature. These include ether, air, fire, water and earth. The ancient Greeks spoke of the Earth as being surrounded by water, the water by air, and the air by ether. Beyond the ether was nothing. The difference between air and ether is that air is what we breathe and space is what we move through. Dr. Frawley explains the relationship between the 5 elements in the following manner. "All elements originate from ether. Ether moves to become air, air causes friction to become fire, fire becomes water as it becomes denser, water becomes earth as it coagulates. And all five elements are contained in the earth."

The Doshas, Prakruti and Vikruti
Vata
The Vata dosha is comprised of the air and ether elements. This means that it has qualities that are similar to these elements. Vata is very much like the wind - it is light, cold, dry and mobile People with a Vata nature experience these qualities by having bodies with low weight, thin bones, and dry skin and hair. They often move and speak quickly. When out of balance they may lose weight, become constipated, and have weakness in their immune and nervous systems.
People who have a Vata personality reflect the qualities of lightness, coolness, dryness, and mobility. They tend to be talkative, enthusiastic, creative, flexible, and energetic. When out of balance they may become easily confused and overwhelmed, have difficulty focusing or making decisions, and have trouble sleeping. This becomes more apparent when they are under stress. They are challenged by cool emotions like worry, fear and anxiety.
Vata is balanced by the opposing qualities of warmth, heaviness (or nourishment), moistness and stability. In the diet this is reflected in the consumption of cooked grains such as rice and cooked vegetables as well as the intake of warm milk with ghee and spices. Pungent herbs like ginger or cumin or cinnamon increase internal heat and nourishing herbs like ashwagandha bring balance to Vata.
...
Pitta
The Pitta dosha is comprised of the fire and water elements. People with a significant amount of Pitta nature have many of the qualities of fire within them. Pitta tends to be hot, light, dry & oily, mobile, sharp and penetrating The oily nature of Pitta is related to the secondary component of water. People with a Pitta nature reflect these qualities. They tend to feel warm, have somewhat oily skin, penetrating eyes, and sharp features. Their bodies tend to have moderate weight and good musculature. When out of balance, they tend toward diarrhea, infections, skin rashes, and weakness in the liver, spleen, and blood.
People who have a Pitta personality tend to be highly focused, competitive, capable, courageous, energetic, and clear communicators, who get right to the point. They like to solve problems, and, when under stress, they dig in their heels. However, they can also become overly intense and speak with a sharp tongue. They make great friends but feared enemies. Emotionally, they are challenged by the heated emotions of anger, resentment, and jealousy.
Pitta is balanced by the opposing qualities of coolness, heaviness (nourishing) and dryness. Cool spices like fennel or cardamom are recommended in the diet along with foods such as raw vegetables, cooked rice, and wheat as well as most beans. Sweet herbs like shatavari are used to nourish the body, while bitters like dandelion root temper the fire.
...
Kapha
The Kapha dosha is comprised of the water and earth elements. Like these elements Kapha tends to be cool, moist, stable, and heavy People with a Kapha nature reflect these qualities in their bodies with dense and heavy bones, lustrous hair, supple skin, low metabolism, coolness on the skin surface, and large stocky frames. When out of balance Kapha individuals are prone to gaining weight and tend to have weaknesses in their lungs and sinuses, where there is an accumulation of mucous. Those of Kapha nature are also most prone to non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. The elements of water and earth are also manifested in the personality The heavy, stable nature of Kapha is reflected in a steady personality with few fluctuations. Those with a Kapha nature handle stress very well, often not even noticing that it exists. They don't like change, are generally conservative, and would prefer to keep things just the way they are. Those with a Kapha nature are also comfort seekers because of their soft, watery nature. They become very possessive and attached. Too much comfort, however, can lead to a lack of motivation and a feeling of becoming stuck. When Kapha is out of balance the heavy emotions of depression and lethargy result. Kapha is balanced by the opposing qualities of lightness, dryness, and warmth. Grains such as quinoa and amaranth are recommended as well as hot spices like cayenne pepper, and dry ginger. Lots of vegetables and very small amounts of nuts or dairy are prescribed. Cleansing herbs like guggul and pungents like clove bring balance to Kapha.
...
Prakruti (Essential Constitution)
The doshic constitution you are conceived with. There is usually a mixture of doshas with 1 dosha dominating. This is your essential nature that will remain constant for life. It determines the distinctive qualities of your mind and body when you are in balance. Knowing what your dosha is provides invaluable information that will help you get in touch with your body's inner intelligence.
Vikruti (Imbalance)
Vikruti is the set of imbalances that you are currently experiencing in the body and mind. An Ayurvedic practitioner tailors the therapies to address these imbalances. For example if one is experiencing dryness in the system, then eating more soups, drinking warm teas, and adding demulcents may be the appropriate therapy to counteract the dryness.

Energy
Prana
Prana is our vital life force energy. Our body is the physical manifestation of prana. Prana is the difference between a living person and a dead person. Thinking, feeling, perceiving, breathing, rest, exercise all reflect prana within us. Prana comes into our body via food, water, air, and sensory impressions. There is an abundance of prana in organic foods, homemade foods prepared with loving hands, pure water, nature, and good thoughts and intentions. Balanced prana yields a healthy enthusiasm for life. Deficient prana leads to depression, loss of motivation and enthusiasm.
Disease is an imbalance in prana, and the 3 doshas reflect the 3 statuses of prana. There are many different methods for working on increasing prana in the body. Prana can be transferred thru the sense of touch; hence body work is a component of Ayurveda. Body work helps loosen pranic blockages in muscles and bones. Herbs aid the processes of digestion, elimination and sweat in order that proper movement of prana can occur. Prana can also be increased by meditation and mantras. Meditation helps to open the prana in the mind. Mantras energize prana. Prana physically feeds our ojas, and ojas feeds our aura.
...
Ojas
Ojas is the physical and energetic container of all 7 physical tissues of the body. Ojas is the highest nourishment derived from food that keeps the body fresh and alive, and is the ultimate result of digestion, metabolism, absorption and assimilation Ojas is formed after the 7 physical tissues of the body (plasma, blood, muscle, fat, bone, bone marrow, and reproductive tissue) have formed. Therefore the quality of ojas is determined by the quality of food and water that is taken into the body. If one eats high prana foods and has good digestion, then good ojas will be formed. It has a physical nature because it is the subtlest essence of food, but it also has an energetic quality. Ojas is the bridge between our physical aspect of our nature and our energetic nature; this subtle food essence transforms via the agni (digestive fire or pitta) into the vitality or the energy in every cell to live and grow. Ojas provides vibrancy in our being; it is our deeper strength and immunity formed through proper digestion.
Ojas helps one endure stress, prevents prana from dissipating from the body, and creates a vibrant, healthy immune system. People with ojas just look healthy and glowing, like they have just been on holiday, or just fallen in love. Babies have lots of ojas and that is what makes them so appealing to us.
Deficient ojas leads to mental fatigue and loss of mental stability. Signs of low ojas include: dryness in the body, constipation, gas, anxiety, fear, inflammation, intense emotions, anger, resentment, allergies, sensitivities, autoimmune issues, chronic illness, mental fatigue, and loss of mental stability.
Balanced ojas yields good mental stamina and is responsible for perfect health, positive feelings, healthy thought patterns, love, joy, better immunity, longevity, intelligence, creativity, memory, bliss, and higher states of consciousness.
Things that increase ojas include: proper sleep, love, right diet, deep breathing, non-reactive thinking, tonifying therapies, foods like milk, ghee, almonds, herbs like ashwagandha and shatavari, and chyavanprash (an herbal paste).
...
Aura
Aura is the vital energy field surrounding whole body and includes the physical and subtle planes. Aura is our energy field through which Prana circulates, and is made of the 5 koshas. The aura encloses all bodily functions, nadis, and chakras. Aura strength depends on ojas (essence of tissue) strength. It is the energy behind subtle immune system and protects body from negative psychic influences. A strong aura prevents subtle energies entering the subtle body and protects the body from negative psychic influences. If ojas is weak and these subtle energies enter then they can become imbedded in subtle body and cause disease. In other words, disruption of aura equals disease.
Indicators of healthy aura include: luster in eyes, complexion, willpower, creativity, integrity, vibrant pulse. These are the same indicators of healthy ojas and healthy ojas is derived from high prana foods and sensory intakes
Things that weaken the aura include: not treating the root cause of disease, giving the mind over to external influence and not listening to our inner voice, excess stimulation, travel, exercise, immoderate sex, excessive sensory use, radiation, environmental pollution, and mass media.
Things that strengthen aura include: removing ourselves from devitalizing locations, situations, energy drains, changing negative attitudes & emotions, right thought, right action, pranayama (breath practices), gems, mantra, and meditation.
...
Why do we care about prana, ojas, and aura?
They seem so artificial and ethereal. They are very real and we care about them because we are healing the body on a physical, emotional, and spiritual level. Healing may start out on a physical level, but all levels are healed even if we don't realize it.
...

The Mind + Body Connection
We are healing the body on a physical, emotional, and spiritual level. Healing may start out on a physical level, but all levels are healed even if we do not realize it. Deepak Chopra and David Simon view Ayurveda as a way to heal the body and mind on a physical and energetic level. Quantum theory, which is what Deepak Chopra espouses, is one way of understanding the Mind-Body connection. Physical matter and energy are interchangeable at the quantum level.
In the book, Free to Love Free to Heal, Heal Your Body by Healing your Emotions, Dr. Simon talks about how current medical science resists the connection between mind and body. " Our reductionistic medical science resists these connections. Heartburn results not from job stress, but from hydrochloric acid molecules leaking into the esophagus. High blood pressure is caused by excessive amounts of circulating angiotensin molecules, not a turbulent marriage. Your insomnia has little to do with the early childhood experience of your parents arguing after you went to bed; rather it reflects a deficiency of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA Your depression is explainable by a lack of serotonin, so there is no need to explore whether your relationships are nurturing or if you are fulfilling your true life purpose. Though in each case the symptom has its root in an underlying narrative about the inability to give or receive love, in conventional medicine we continue to ignore the love story that longs to be revealed." (pg xvii) He elaborates further on p 15 " ...Ayurveda offers a valuable approach to emotional and physical health – a holistic perspective that recognizes that the two are, in fact, inseparable. The Ayurvedic physicians of 5000 years ago knew something that has now been verified by modern science: the mind, including our thoughts, emotions, and desires, is inextricably connected to our body. At the deepest level, they are on indistinguishable unit – a river of intelligence shaped by our choices, experiences, reactions, and beliefs." Painful psychological experiences can impede our well-being as much as poor diet choices. Yoga and Ayurveda provide us with tools to re-establish the connection between our mind and body.
Ayurveda says that if we begin to understand ourselves well enough and have adopted habits that support us, then we can sense when disease is starting further out from the physical body and catch it at an energetic stage. Catching the disease process sooner allows us to use simpler and more subtle methods of healing and thus possibly avoiding the physical manifestation of disease all together. Understanding ourselves is another way of saying we see our purpose in life clearly and choose those things which support us. This is the goal of both Ayurveda and Yoga.

Panchakarma
Panchakarma (five actions) is a cleansing and rejuvenating program for the body, mind and
consciousness. It is known for its beneficial effects on overall health, wellness and self-healing.
It is the cornerstone of Ayurveda.
The Benefits of Panchakarma
Eliminate toxins and toxic conditions from your body and mind
Restore your constitutional balance improving health and wellness
Strengthen your immune system and become more resistant to illness
Reverse the negative effects of stress on your body and mind thereby slowing the aging process
Enhance your self-reliance, strength, energy, vitality and mental clarity
Bring about deep relaxation and sense of well-being
According to Ayurveda, our natural state is one of health, happiness and an inner sense of well-being. Health is defined as the body being clear of toxins (ama), the mind is at peace, emotions are calm and happy, wastes are efficiently eliminated and organs are functioning normally. In a busy, stressful and toxic world, our physical and mental systems accumulate toxins causing deterioration in bodily functioning. This eventually weakens our systems, which opens the door for chronic, degenerative, and non-specific diseases to develop. These can evolve into serious specific diseases, ultimately damaging an individual's health and wellness.
Panchakarma can help by reversing these negative effects of daily living. It can restore your natural state of health and wellness by cleansing your body of toxins, bringing balance into your system and improving bodily function. It can also help you sustain this process by making positive changes in lifestyle. The balancing effects of Panchakarma can be felt for a long time after the regimen.
Panchakarma is a gentle yet powerful Ayurvedic approach to rejuvenation and detoxification. Panchakarma aids a natural cellular cleansing process gently rather than using harsh or shocking protocols as with other cleanses. It is generally an eight day process with 8 days of an easily digestible diet, and 3 days of body therapies. The cleanse begins at home with a diet consisting of cooked, easy-to-digest foods such as rice, vegetables, lentils, stewed fruit, herbal decoctions, and clarified butter. By eliminating irritating foods and drinks and focusing on nourishing simple foods, the digestive system is given a rest, and the natural cleansing aspect of our system releases toxins. Treatments start after five days of this preparation phase, and each treatment day consists of body therapies.
Panchakarma is an experience nourishing to all the 5 senses. Treatments can vary and are custom designed for your individual needs. Most treatments begin with a warm oil therapy, followed by hot towels or a steam bath, to open and purify the skin. Other treatments include treatments for the eyes, ears and nose, cleansing and nourishing skin treatments with poultices or herbal pastes, localized body treatments, localized oil treatments over chakras or organs needing attention, and more. Panchakarma is a unique, natural, holistic, health-giving series of therapeutic treatments that cleanse the body's deep tissues of toxins, open the subtle channels, and bring life-enhancing energy thereby increasing vitality, inner peace, confidence and well-being.

Yoga
The meaning of yoga is "union with source". Yoga science exists in 4 major forms and all have the same destination, union with source:
Karma Yoga (yoga of selfless action and involves subduing the ego thru selfless service)
Bhakti Yoga (yoga of devotion and involves subduing the ego thru devotion to a teacher)
Jnana Yoga (yoga of knowledge involves subduing the ego thru study, inquiry, reflection and
the realization that all physical creation is an illusion)
Raja Yoga (royal path of yoga outlined by Patanjali, involves Hatha Yoga)
Our yoga practice helps us to create a union between our individual self and our Higher Self. Connecting with our true individual self is the intent of Ayurveda. Most of what is commonly referred to as yoga in the West comes from physical aspects of either Raja Yoga (the royal path of Yoga) or Hatha Yoga (forced or persistent action of body and mind). Hatha yoga has roots in both Raja yoga and Tantra .Tantric yoga is a vast territory of sciences which includes astronomy, astrology, numerology, physiognomy, physics, chemistry, alchemy, Ayurveda psychology, mathematics, geometry, and others.
The great sage of India's Raja Yoga, Patanjali, outlines 8 steps for helping one control the body, energy, senses, and mind to ultimately attain union with Source or enlightenment or Self-realization. Raja Yoga's chief practice is meditation and therefore Raja yoga uses asanas (mostly meditative asanas) to get the body ready for prolonged meditation.
Raja Yoga includes:
the yamas (the rules for how to live externally, how we live with others)
ahimsa=non-violence,
satyam = truthfulness,
aparigraha = not taking from others,
brahmacharya = right use of sex,
asteya = non-possessiveness
niyamas (the rules for how to live internally, how we conduct ourselves)
saucha=cleanliness,
santash=contentment,
tapas=self-discipline,
swadaya = self-study,
ishwarapranida= devotion to the journey
asana (postures),
pranayama (breath techniques),
pratayhara (pulling of the senses inward),
dharana ( concentration),
dhyana (sustained concentration or meditation), and
Samadhi ( bliss, integrated consciousness, enlightenment).
Hatha Yoga includes:
asana (physical postures),
purification practices (shatkarma ),
controlled breathing (pranayama),
calming of the mind thru meditation and relaxation,
use of chakras (energy centers),
kundalini (dormant force or potential energy lying at the base of the spine),
kriyas (techniques for working with kundalini energy),
bandhas (muscular locks),
nadis (energetic channels in the body), and
mudras (symbolic gestures).

Hatha Yoga uses these tools to improve the body's physical health and to clear the mind in preparation for meditation. When body and energy are under control, meditation is the natural outcome. The philosophy behind Hatha yoga is to first purify the body and then mind will naturally be ready for meditation. Whereas the philosophy in Raja Yoga is to purify the mind first, then purify the body, and then practice meditation. Hatha Yoga is the source for Sivananda, Bikram, Iyengar, Kripalu, Restorative, Viniyoga, and Yoga therapy. According to Hathapradipika, there is no raja yoga (meditative practices) without hatha yoga (postures) and no hatha yoga (postures) without raja yoga (meditative practices).
Yoga postures facilitate mind-body coordination and mind-body synthesis, and bring about a natural balance in our bodies. Once imbalances have been assessed, then yoga poses can help correct those imbalances. We need Yoga for Ayurveda because we need to realize our full human potential in order to use our good health properly. And we need Ayurveda for Yoga because we need good health and vital energy to realize our full human potential.

Special oils/creams are applied to the 28 marma points in the body to enhance prana circulation through all the energetic centers in the body. The marma protocol is followed by an abhyanga (warm oil body treatment), and a shirodhara (warm oil on the forehead). This is a very subtle body treatment which can be valuable in life transitions, or coming out of intense medical treatment protocols or appropriate after other cleansing therapies.
